VANCOMYCIN IS A LIFESAVING ANTIBIOTIC

Vancomycin is a lifesaving antibiotic that originated from the jungles of Borneo and was first isolated in the laboratory in 1953.

It is used intravenously for the treatment of bloodstream infections, skin infections, endocarditis, bone and joint infections and meningitis caused by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus.

Learning objectives for this module are:

  • How to calculate a loading dose of vancomycin
  • How to calculate a regular dose of vancomycin
  • How to administer vancomycin
  • How to monitor vancomycin
Vancomycin

Clinical content for this module has been based on Therapeutic Guidelines: Antibiotic (Version 15) and the Australian Injectable Drugs Handbook (6th edition).

This learning module does not address administration of vancomycin by continuous infusion.

And remember, in most cases the dose of vancomycin should be given while waiting for the level to come back. If a dose adjustment is needed, it can be made for the following dose.
